Why 'Cuddy Duck'?
A Cuddy Duck is an Eider Duck, which are found around the coast of Europe and are commonly seen in the harbours and islands of the North East of England, particularly at Amble and Seahouses.

The Farne Islands in Northumberland, England have a colony that is quite famous because of St Cuthbert who is the patron saint of Northumberland.
Saint Cuthbert made the eider ducks on The Farnes a protected species and the birds were the subject of one of the first ever bird protection laws in the year 676.

The birds are still called Cuddy's ducks in the area, "Cuddy" being the familiar form of "Cuthbert". You can see an eider duck painted with St Cuthbert on one of the murals at Wallington Hall.

I spent my holidays in and around the coast of Northumberland as a child and many summers in Amble where I saw the eider ducks and loved the colourful plumage of the male ducks. My dad told me the tale of St Cuthbert and he called the eiders Cuddy Ducks.

When Len and I set up our chocolate company the name summed up all the wonderful times spent on the coast. Northumberland is a magical place and The Farnes are fantastic. Len and I have spent many a weekend out and about at Beadnell and The Farnes where Len dived and I watched the birds and seals.

Cuddy Duck became our name because of the special memories the name evokes and we hope you enjoy eating the chocolates we love to make.
